The probability of health concerns arising due to the use of e-cigarettes has become a hot topic of debate since last few months. More and more people have started going for these artificial smoking pipes as they have become commonly available these days.
According to a report from the US CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), there is a dramatic increase in the overall number of phone calls made by people to poison centers in relation to e-cigarette liquids containing nicotine. In 2010, the centers used to receive just one call per month in relation to the subject. Now, it receives at least 215 calls every month.
E-cigarette, also known as electronic cigarette, is a kind of electronic device working on battery. It simulates smoking of tobacco. The gadget is comprised mainly of two things, a heating element and a solution. When a user sucks on the gadget, the sensor therein activates the heating element. Then, the heating element causes the liquid solution therein to vaporize. The user gets a feeling of smoking by inhaling these vapors.
The solution to be used in the device comes in a variety of flavors. Many of them contain nicotine while there are non-nicotine options available too. In the recent years, the use of these electronic cigarettes has increased considerably. According to the details revealed during the National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) in 2011-2012, the use of these cigarettes by middle and high school students in 2012 is almost double of the figures recorded in 2011. Similar findings were revealed by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Several observers have an assumption that e-cigarettes are much safer than regular ones mainly because the electronic ones do not contain an element called tar. Tar plays a very destructive role in deteriorating health of a regular smoker. But the jury in US has not confirmed yet about the safety advantages of e-cigarette over the traditional ones. Still, many believe that using the electronic ones can help smokers quit their habit of smoking.
As mentioned earlier, many e-cigarettes typically contain nicotine. This can encourage its users to go a step ahead take up the habit of conventional smoking. In a study done by Medical News Today, it was revealed that e-cigarettes have a good potential to cause damage to lungs even though they are considered safer than the regular ones.
